Sunday Book Haul: June 21

I had a nice and productive Sunday which started off with brunch with my flatmate at a new-to-us cafe called Symmetry. There are so many indie cafes in Singapore so it’s always fun to try new places and see whether their food and coffee are any good. Symmetry is one of the good ones, I wouldn’t mind going back there to try other items on their menu. After brunch, we headed back to the flat to catch up on weekend chores. And then I was able to laze around for a bit, always a good thing!

Late afternoon, I headed off to the bookstore. I wanted to get the UK edition of Uprooted by Naomi Novik, which is our book club’s choice for this month. But even though their website said the book was available in their main store, they didn’t have any copies. So I browsed around and grabbed these titles:

June 21 - book haul

This Is Hong Kong by M. Sasek – which is part of the This Is series of books

Rat Queens Volume Two: The Far Reaching Tentacles of N’rygoth – I have a copy of Volume 1 but haven’t read it yet! I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Volume 2 was already out.

Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol – I’ve heard nothing but good things about this children’s graphic novel.

There was also a copy of This One Summer that I considered getting but it was a damaged copy so I let it go. I’ve been reading mostly ebooks lately because they’re more convenient (easier to acquire and takes less space) but I can’t resist getting physical copies of illustrated books and graphic novels.

As if getting new books wasn’t enough, I also grabbed these other goodies: nail polish from Illamasqua (I’ve been waiting for them to restock these two shades) and almonds coated with dark chocolate from La Cure Gourmande:

What about the rest of you, how was your weekend? Did you visit a bookstore or buy any books? I always feel like weekends go by so fast. Fingers crossed that I’ll feel the same way about the work week!

Shoot That Book: How to Save a Life

Shoot That Book combines my passion for books and my tendency to become trigger happy with a camera. My lack of photography skills is compensated by my enthusiasm. Basically, I like taking pictures of books.

Shoot That Book nail polish edition is back! I always take advantage of cheaper nail salon rates whenever I’m in Manila. Everything is much more expensive in Singapore so I’ve never gotten a haircut or had my nails done here. I went to a nail salon with my friend and she said she was getting a colored French tip and it looked nice so I got the same thing. Incidentally, the colors that I picked matched the cover of a book that I recently received: How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr.

How to Save a Life

This book reminds me of The Fray song that has the same title. Wonder if it fits the story? My nail polish posts are easy – I just choose a book that has a cover that matches the colors of the nail polish that I have on. I wanted to highlight a blogger who does amazing nail art. Mandee is the girl behind The Bookish Manicurist and she does beautiful artwork with her nails. What’s even better is she matches her nails to the covers of the books that she reads. I love all of the nail art that she’s posted because they all look so pretty and nail art based on books – what’s not to like? You have to drop by her blog to check it out. I wish I was half as good as she is when it comes to painting nails.

Shoot That Book: Hallowed

Shoot That Book combines my passion for books and my tendency to become trigger happy with a camera. My lack of photography skills is compensated by my enthusiasm. Basically, I like taking pictures of books.

I did a Shoot That Book nail polish post for Unearthly a few months ago so I thought it would be a good idea to do the same thing for its sequel, Hallowed. Once again, thanks to my friend Celina for letting me borrow her copy.

Hallowed by Cynthia Hand

It’s not an exact match but I think the dark blue of the nail polish goes well with the color scheme of the Hallowed cover. I’ve finished reading this and I don’t think I’ll write a review for it because I’ll probably just end up saying the same things that I mentioned in my Unearthly review – it was easy to fall into but I didn’t really love it. I’m glad people warned me that the love triangle is more obvious in this installment so I was prepared for that.

Still not sure if I’ll read the last book in the trilogy but maybe I will just to find out how everything ends. And also so I can feature it again on a Shoot That Book post. I wonder what color the cover for Boundless will be?

Shoot That Book: Garden Spells and Nail Polish

Shoot That Book combines my passion for books and my tendency to become trigger happy with a camera. My lack of photography skills is compensated by my enthusiasm. Basically, I like taking pictures of books.

This is another Shoot That Book nail polish post because I was bored while waiting to meet up with friends for dinner last Friday so I decided to have my nails done. I wanted a color that’s bright and happy so it would be perfect for summer. I chose this frosted light green polish and was delighted when I found out that it matches the cover for one of my favorite books: Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen:

I think Sarah Addison Allen’s books are comfort reads and I love going through them. Garden Spells is my favorite, which is funny because I have a used paperback copy of it while I have hardcovers for the rest of her books. Hopefully, I can find a hardcover edition to match the rest. I think the Garden Spells cover is lovely, especially with the gold trim near the title:

I promise this will be the last nail polish post for a while! I need to think of more creative Shoot That Book pictures to show you guys. In the meantime, feel free to let me know what’s your favorite Sarah Addison Allen title and if you have any recommendations similar to her writing.

Shoot That Book: Unearthly and Nail Polish

Shoot That Book combines my passion for books and my tendency to become trigger happy with a camera. My lack of photography skills is compensated by my enthusiasm. Basically, I like taking pictures of books.

Since several of you liked my previous Shoot That Book nail polish post, I thought I’d do something similar this week. I used the same brand that changes color when it’s cold. It’s a Korean brand called Dear Rus. Here’s a light purple color that perfectly matches the cover of Unearthly, the next book that I’ll be reading along with friends Janice of Janicu’s Book Blog and Holly of Book Harbinger:

Unearthly cover with matching nail polish

Thanks again to my friend Celina for giving me a copy of this book! I’ve heard good things about Unearthly so I’m looking forward to reading it. It’s funny because it’s summer over here in the Philippines and it’s extremely hot, reaching 35 degrees Celsius (95 in Fahrenheit). So I kept dipping my hands in cold water so I can take a picture of what the nail polish looks like when it’s cold but the moment I remove my hands from the water, it reverts back to its usual color. Here’s the best that I could do:

Nail polish that matches Unearthly

It changes to a darker blue shade. How about the rest of you, care to share nail polish + book pictures? Holly showed me this the other day. And what’s the weather like where you’re located?

Shoot That Book: The Gabriel Hounds

Shoot That Book combines my passion for books and my tendency to become trigger happy with a camera. My lack of photography skills is compensated by my enthusiasm. Basically, I like taking pictures of books.

Shoot That Book nail polish edition is back! See, I have this thing of taking pictures of my nail polish with a book cover that matches it. I know it’s a bit silly but I think it’s fun. Click here to view previous photos. The nail polish colors that I’m wearing in these pictures were actually just borrowed from my officemate. I think the light blue, kind of aqua tones go well with the pretty cover design of The Gabriel Hounds by Mary Stewart. I am ashamed to admit that I haven’t read this book but I hope to do so soon.

What’s great about this special nail polish is it changes color depending on temperature. See what happens when I dip my hands in cold water:

Pretty cool, huh? I’m no longer wearing these shades but I’ll keep you guys posted the next time I have nail polish on – if I manage to find a book cover to match it. Also, I think I’m getting better at putting on my own polish (a lot cheaper than going to a salon to get a manicure).

Shoot That Book: Nails That Match Book Covers

Shoot That Book combines my passion for books and my tendency to become trigger happy with a camera. My lack of photography skills is compensated by my enthusiasm. Basically, I like taking pictures of books.

For my last Shoot That Book post of the year, I thought I’d do something that involves several pictures. I noticed that throughout the year, I’ve been posting pictures of my nails whenever they match the cover of a book that I have. So I compiled all of them into a collage of sorts:

Shiny pink for Unsticky by Sarra Manning, mint green and purple for Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins, apple green and blue-green for The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty and bright red for Ex-Mas by Kate Brian. I used to be hopeless when it comes to painting my own nails but I think I just need more practice. So look for more shots like the ones posted here whenever I find a nail polish that will match a certain book cover. I really enjoy doing my Shoot That Book posts so expect to see more book-related photos in 2012. Happy Holidays, everyone!

Shoot That Book: Random Office Snapshots

Shoot That Book combines my passion for books and my tendency to become trigger happy with a camera. My lack of photography skills is compensated by my enthusiasm. Basically, I like taking pictures of books.

Remember the train from our office decorations? When they took down the pile of gifts and things on top of the train, my officemate placed the books in my desk and I took a picture of it:

Sorry for the low quality, I just used my phone’s camera. Those books are still in our office, I haven’t taken them home yet because they’re too heavy to lug around when commuting. Here’s another fun shot, candy-colored nails:

Any random bits of holiday happiness you guys want to share? 🙂

Shoot That Book: Colorful Nails

Shoot That Book combines my passion for books and my tendency to become trigger happy with a camera. My lack of photography skills is compensated by my enthusiasm. Basically, I like taking pictures of books.

Saw that my nails matched the cover for The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty, which I got from my friend Celina yesterday at the Filipino ReaderCon so I had to take a picture.

The blue-green color is called Mint Mojito while the bright green is Apple Green. Cute, right? 🙂 Also, can’t wait to read this book. I’m starting to realize that these Shoot That Book posts reflect little tidbits about my personal life. Hope you guys enjoy looking at my posts.
