January Miscellaneous Bookstagrams

In my previous post, I did a round-up of my bookstagram reviews. In this one, I’m sharing miscellaneous bookstagrams that aren’t reviews. I figured I might as well share these because they also show some of the books I’ve acquired in January.

Book quote from The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden

Book quote from The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner

Received as gift: An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

Happy book birthday to Start Here, a romanceclass anthology

As always, please feel free to share what you think of these! What books did you take pictures of in January? πŸ˜› Or what books have you acquired?

Book Haul: Signed and Personalized Copies

In yesterday’s blog post about resolutions, I mentioned that I need to incorporate more of my bookstagrams here on the blog. If you have an Instagram account and you’re interested in following me, I’m chachickenpie over there. I’ve been lucky enough to receive a few signed and personalized copies of my favorite books in the past month or so, and I wanted to share them here.

First is a lovely package sent by one of my favorite authors, Lucy Parker. Swipe left to see all of the photos:

@lucyparkerauthor is one of my all-time favorite romance authors. She writes witty contemporary romances set in West End, and I have so much love for her books.πŸ’™πŸ’š She's not just an awesome writer, she's super generous as well! Not only did she send me personalized copies of her books (together with fancy Whittaker's dark chocolates), she also sent a whole stack of signed copies to @minavesguerra, which were distributed to the #romanceclass community.πŸ“šπŸ« Everyone who got physical copies already have her books in ebook format, which goes to show how much we love them. Maraming salamat, Lucy! THANK YOU SO MUCH.πŸ’œπŸ’› Please visit us in Manila, promise we'll do something fun that's romance/theater-related.πŸ˜‰

Next, my good friend Michelle of See Michelle Read had Megan Whalen Turner personalize The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia for me! Again, swipe left to see all of the photos:

So, so, so. In my last post, I talked about Thick as Thieves as part of my Best of 2017 list. Lo and behold, I get a notice to pick up a package from the post office and it's a Queen's Thief-themed one! THANK YOU SO MUCH to my generous friend @seemichelleread for thinking of me when she saw Megan Whalen Turner at Y'ALLWEST earlier this year!β€πŸ™Œ . . Now I have signed and personalized copies of two of my all-time favorite books: The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia. Perfect for all the times I'll be rereading these in the future (These are my fourth copies, I think? I have paperbacks of the old editions, ebooks, and my lending copies are with a friend). I love that Michelle wrapped them up nicely for Christmas.πŸŽ„πŸ˜Š So glad they arrived just before Christmas. Thanks also to MWT for including a message and bookplates for additional books! . . If you haven't read this brilliant YA fantasy series, you really should start on it ASAP. No one writes like MWT does. I will forever be in awe of how beautifully she pulls off plot twists and turns, and also how she delivers clever dialogue. Reading order: The Thief, The Queen of Attolia, The King of Attolia, A Conspiracy of Kings, Thick as Thieves. . . If you've read this series and have book recs for MWT fans, feel free to share them!

Last but not the least, new-to-me author Alyssa Cole sent me a signed copy of her upcoming book A Princess in Theory:

Thank you so much for all of these, Lucy, Michelle (and Megan), and Alyssa! πŸ™‚ I actually have more books acquired in my Kindle, maybe I should do a book haul post for those sometime. What about you, what books have you acquired lately?

Recent Haul: Graphic Novel, Lipstick and Bookish Shirts

Quick post to share some of the book-related stuff I’ve acquired. I actually only bought one book: Monstress Vol. 2 by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, which I’m been waiting to become available here in the Philippines. I loved Vol. 1 and I can’t wait to dive into Vol. 2. On the same day, I also bought a sort of bookish lipstick because it has a Beauty and the Beast theme. Check it out:

Swipe right to see more pics. πŸ™‚ Next is my haul of bookish shirts! I found a local seller here in the Philippines who does custom prints and I ordered the designs below. Honestly, it was so hard to narrow down the choices to just five designs. I wanted to many more. But then I can always order more later on, right? πŸ˜› The last time I had bookish shirts was when I ordered them from Threadless, and sadly those shirts don’t fit anymore. These new shirts of mine will be perfect with my bookish skirts.

Swipe right to see more pics of the shirts, and a pic of me wearing one of them. πŸ™‚ I shared the pic on Twitter and Ilona shared it, yay:

I’m traveling for a few days, so I wouldn’t be online here on WordPress that much but I will be updating all other social media apps that I have on my phone.:D What books or other bookish stuff have you acquired lately?

Holiday Book Haul

I think I may be allergic to the office. I went back to work on Tuesday and then I got a fever and a sore throat that evening. I kept going to the office and just slept as early as I can at night but I lost my voice yesterday evening so today, I gave in and went to the doctor to get a medical certificate so I could take the rest of the day off to rest.

.

While I was able to take a nap this afternoon, I wasn’t able to get any reading done. In fact, I should be getting ready for bed now but I wanted to squeeze in a quick post about my book haul during the holiday season. The order is kind of a mess but these were the books I acquired:

.
Last Friday's brunch meet up with Filipino readers and authors: Celina, Chris, Mina, Honey and Kim

Some other books I bought/downloaded for free, but were only posted on Litsy and not Instagram so I can’t embed them here:
Dark Horse by Michelle Diener
The Future Chosen by Mina V. Esguerra
Big Rock by Lauren Blakely
The Art of Deception by Stephanie Burgis
Alex + Ada Volume 3 by Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn

I was also very excited to receive these review copies of my anticipated books:

.

A new Laura Florand is always something to be happy about. She's one of my favorite romance authors. I've loved all of the other titles in her La vie en Roses series set in Grasse, France, featuring a family in the perfume business. I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy this one too. I couldn't resist taking a pic of A Crown of Bitter Orange with this bottle of orange blossom EDT (I bought the cologne version). Maybe I should have done this for Once Upon a Rose and A Wish Upon Jasmine too? πŸ“–πŸŒΉ FYI, Once Upon a Rose is on sale for just 0.99usd now. Such a good bargain! . . . #LauraFlorand #ACrownofBitterOrange #LavieenRoses #romance #bookblogger #reviewcopy #bookstagram #instabooks #bibliophile #IGreads #IGbooks #booksPH #Litsy #ChristineLhuillierParfumerie #fragrance #perfume

When I woke up this morning, I saw the notification that @berkleyromance approved my NetGalley request for Julie James' latest novel. Thank you!!πŸ“–πŸŽ‰ One of my most anticipated titles in 2017 because she writes the best romantic banter.πŸ’– I'm always surprised (in a good way) whenever I'm approved for a review copy because as an international reader/blogger, my default expectation is to be rejected.πŸ˜‚ @fantaghiro23, we were just talking about this book yesterday! . . . #JulieJames #TheThingAboutLove #BerkleyRomance #romance #bookblogger #reviewcopy #bookstagram #instabooks #bibliophile #IGreads #IGbooks #booksPH #Litsy #NetGalley #Kindle #bookandlunch #CafeBreton #cafehopping #foodstagram #Manilafoodie #foodieManila

I feel like this moment of my book blogging experience should be highlighted because I have review copies by my favorite authors: Ilona Andrews, Andrea K. Host, Julie James, Laura Florand and Lucy Parker! πŸ™‚ I’ve already read White Hot and In Arcadia (short review on Litsy) but I’m having a difficult time choosing which one to prioritize among the remaining three. Now I just need Thick as Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner and The Pearl Thief by Elizabeth Wein and I’ll be all set. πŸ˜€

I was also able to pass on some of the physical books that I have in my Manila bookshelf to friends when we had a get together. I really feel bad that my books have just been sitting neglected on my shelf and they’re aging fast because of heat and humidity. I feel better that they’re now with people who would potentially enjoy reading them. I think I’ve culled like half of my bookshelf back home, I’ve mostly kept signed books and the ones that I plan to reread.

I hope this post wasn’t too confusing with its mix of Instagram and Litsy links. As you can see, I’ve tried to be active on other social media sites but I know it’s also a good idea to consolidate all of those posts here on WordPress. I’m off to rest! What about you, have you received or bought any books recently? πŸ™‚

Book Haul: Secret Santa Edition

Every year, my online book club (YAckers) has a Secret Santa gift exchange. And because we all love books, we tend to focus on those as gifts. I’ve previously posted my haul from past Secret Santas (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) so I thought it would be nice to keep up with the tradition. These are the books I received:

.

And I also took a picture of books I received from past Secret Santa exchanges that I still haven’t found time to read:

.

Sigh, so many books, so little time! I find it interesting that most of the books I received from my fellow YAckers are fantasy titles. I guess we know what’s our favorite genre. I also have a box of Ferrero chocolates from the office Secret Santa (which I think isn’t that interesting haha) but that’s it for this year. Are you guys participating in any form of Secret Santa this year?

Book Haul: Kindle Edition

bookWork has been consuming my life in the last few days but I wanted to do a quick book haul post before the weekend is completely over. I noticed that I’ve acquired quite a few ebooks in my Kindle after my last book haul post, so an update is in order. Some of these are freebies while some were bought at a promo price. In no particular order, here are the newest additions to my Kindle:

Wyvern by Grace Draven
Viking Warrior Rising by Asa Maria Bradley
Underneath It All by Ysa Arcangel
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

See, this is why I don’t think I will ever finish the books in my TBR pile. I just keep getting more and more of them! And there will be more releases this month that I’ll be buying copies of. Have you read any of the books in this list, is there a title that I should bump up? πŸ™‚

In case anyone is wondering what I’m currently reading, it’s The Broken Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin which is the second book in the Inheritance Trilogy.

Fantasy Romance Book Haul

Last week’s book haul featured three romance titles, the last of which (A Promise of Fire Amanda Bouchet) was a fantasy romance. Ever since I finished reading that book, I have been in the mood for more fantasy romance. Which is why this week’s haul is all about that subgenre:

After The Winter King, I read Warprize by Elizabeth Vaughan but I didn’t get a picture! Which is a shame because I enjoyed reading the latter more than the former. If I ever find the time to actually sit down and write reviews, maybe I can do short ones for these.

I then went on a Grace Draven marathon this weekend, starting with Master of Crows:

Which was quickly followed up by The Lightning God’s Wife:

Which is so short that I finished reading it in one sitting! So then I read The Light Within:

Also finished that one in one sitting. I think both The Lightning God’s Wife and The Light Within are bonus short stories that serve like outtakes or epilogues for Master of Crows. The next in the series is a longer novella and is set a few years after the first book. I’ve already downloaded The Brush of Black Wings on my Kindle but haven’t started it yet:

I think I may have to pick up some contemporary titles after this. I don’t want to get burned out on fantasy romance! Also, it hasn’t been easy looking for fantasy romance books that I’m interested enough to try, so feel free to recommend titles if you have favorites.

Even though I’ve bought a couple of ebooks the past week, I’ve tried to be a good girl by resisting temptation in the form of a Kinokuniya sale. I still have so many unread physical books in my TBR pile so I resisted going to the bookstore because I know I might end up buying something. I need to go to bed soon because ugh, Monday will be here in a few minutes! But I’m curious, have you bought or received any books recently?

Romance Book Haul

I acquired some books over the past week so it’s time for a book haul post! First is a package that I received from Lucy Parker, author of Act Like It, which is one of my favorite reads this year:

Snail mail from New Zealand! Act Like It by Lucy Parker is one of my favorite reads this year, so of course I jumped at the chance to get a signed copy when the author offered to send me one.πŸ’–πŸ“– with the added bonus of chocolates and a Jane Austen card. Thank you, Lucy! If you haven't read Act Like It, I highly recomment this fun romance set in West End. An actor and actress have to pretend to be in a relationship. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I have a feeling I'll be tempted to reread Act Like It while waiting for the next one. . . . #ActLikeIt #LucyParker #CarinaPress #romance #bookstagram #instabooks #IGreads #bibliophile #booknerd #bookblogger #bookworm #bookphotograph #bookhaul #paperback #signedcopy #chocolates #snailmail #JaneAustenquote #PotterStyle #ChachicsBookNook

Next is a debut contemporary romance from an Aussie author, I kept hearing good things about this love-hate office romance so I couldn’t resist grabbing it even though it’s more expensive that what I’d normally pay for:

Blueberry lavender chocolate tart, cucumber mint tea and The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. Taking a break from posting Filipino books to talk about my current read. This debut romance was first recommended by @bookthingo, followed by rave reviews from other romance readers. I normally wouldn't spend 9.99usd on an ebook of a debut author but I tried the Kindle sample and wanted to keep going. I just got to a scene where the hero makes tea for the heroine. πŸ‘Œβ˜• . . . #TheHatingGame #SallyThorne #WilliamMorrow #HarperCollins #romance #officeromance #bookstagram #instabooks #IGreads #bibliophile #booknerd #bookblogger #bookworm #bookphotograph #debutnovel #Kindle #ebook #TartBlanc #MilleniaWalk #tart #tea #teatime #cucumbermint #TeaForte #teapot #teacup #bookandtea #cafehoppingSG #SGfood #ChachicsBookNook

Last but not the least, a debut fantasy romance that I’ve also heard positive feedback on:

I think it’s pretty obvious from these pictures that I like tea and desserts, right? πŸ™‚ I really should cut back on sweets but they’re just so hard to resist. Anyway, I’ve finished reading both The Hating Game by Sally Thorne and A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet so I’m hoping I’ll be able to write reviews for both soon. As always, not making any promises because I’m always behind on reviews!

What about you guys, have you bought or received any books lately? Also, please feel free to share recommendations if you have titles similar to the ones I mentioned here. Would love to find similar reads.

V.E. Schwab Book Haul

I survived my first week at the new job! To reward myself, I went to the bookstore and bought two books from this shelf… can you guess which ones they are? πŸ™‚

Kinokuniya bookshelf - taken with Samsung S7

If you guessed A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab then you’re absolutely right! I keep hearing good things about both books from friends so I’ve been wanting to check them out. I know I keep saying I need to buy books in ebook format to save space, but the Kindle editions for these are still pretty pricey, and the UK paperback editions cost just a few more dollars so might as well get physical copies for the prettiness.

V.E. Schwab books

I hope I get to read these soon. Although I’ve heard that the second book ends on a cliffhanger. Maybe I should have waited for all three books to be released before getting the series? Oh well, too late now. πŸ˜›

As an aside, I finally switched from a Samsung S3 to an S7 Edge. The bookshelf pic above was the first one I posted on Instagram using the new phone. I got my old phone when I first moved to Singapore and had it for almost 4 years. I’m loving the upgrade, including having a way better phone camera. So expect nicer shots from me!

Book Haul: World Book Day

Argh, I’m such a book addict. I already went book shopping last month and I haven’t even read the books from that stash and yet I ended up buying more books this weekend. I blame Kinokuniya for having another sale to celebrate World Book Day. It’s so hard to resist buying books when there’s a 20% discount. Here was yesterday’s book haul:

World Book Day 2016 haul

How cute is that latte art with the lion and peacock? Anyway, since the picture may not show the titles clearly, these were the three that I got:

Alex + Ada Amulet The Stonekeeper Seconds

Seconds was a belated birthday gift for my friend. She asked me what I wanted and of course I said books! We went to the bookstore and she let me choose a title that I wanted to read. I’ve been eyeing Seconds for the past few months so I thought it would be a good choice.

Have you read any of these? If yes, what did you think of them? How did you guys celebrate World Book Day? πŸ™‚
