Hey everyone, I wasn’t able to do a blog update prior to leaving but I was in Texas from end of April to the first week of May to attend a friend’s wedding. The last time I traveled to the US was in 2013 which was also to attend a wedding. And my last long haul flight was in 2015 when I visited Prague and Munich! So it’s been a while since I traveled that far. I was updating my bookstagram account while I was there and I wanted to share those posts here too.

I wasn’t able to do that many touristy things but I’m glad I was able to go to two indie bookstores, thank goodness for Uber for letting me go around Dallas. I wouldn’t have been able to visit those stores otherwise! And I also need to pat past Chachic on the back for ordering ahead and taking care of my comics/graphic novels and bookish tote bags haul. Back in Manila now and back to regular programming. I’m still catching up on sleep and errands so I haven’t really been able to read but hopefully that will change soon. What have you all been up to lately? Read any amazing books that you’d like to talk about?
It was my birthday last week! On the 29th of March, and I just wanted to share a quick post about it. Didn’t have any big plans but I did have a nice lunch with my mom and brother at one of my favorite restaurants. I posted real time updates on Twitter, here’s the thread if you want to check it out:
A few days before my birthday, I posted a wish list here on the blog and here’s my haul because of that, swipe to see all of the shots:
Thanks again to all my generous friends who gave me book gifts, I’m so touched. Last but not the least, I didn’t have cake on my actual birthday but there was ice cream:
In February, I did two book haul posts for the comics I bought at Komiket and other books I purchased. For March, these are the new books that I bought and received:
Beginner’s Luck by Kate Clayborn
Hotter Than Ever by Elle Kennedy
Review copies of Ang Mundo ni Andong Agimat, After Eden by Arnold Arre, Private Iris by Jamie Bautista and Arnold Arre
The Tetethered Mage by Melissa Caruso
Jade City by Fonda Lee
Shadow Blade by Seressia Glass
Out of all of these, I’ve read and reviewed Children of Blood and Bone, which I’ll include in my round up of bookstagram reviews at the end of the month. I’m currently in the middle of Jade City and I’m enjoying it so far.
I went to an art/zine/book fair last Saturday called Gandang Ganda sa Sariling Gawa but I’ll do a separate post for that since this one already has so many titles! And I also received a few gifts because of the birthday wish list I made last week so I’ll work on another post for that. What about you, what books have you acquired recently?
In my last book haul post, I mentioned that I’ve mostly been buying ebooks since the year started. The exception to my rule of buying just ebooks is comics or graphic novels, and I bought a lot of them when I dropped by Komiket last weekend. Komiket is a weekend market where Filipino creators sell their comics and artwork like posters and stickers. Some of the comics are trad pubbed by local publishers while some are self-pubbed. Some are written in English, while others are in Filipino, or a mix of both. Some are printed in black and white while others are in full color. In general, it’s a great way to support Filipino artists so they can keep creating more of their work.
Sharing my Twitter thread, where I uploaded some photos while I was at the event:
I went with some friends although we did separate at one point so we could browse on our own. I was so tempted to buy stickers and artwork but I wanted to focus on comics as a priority, because there are so many good titles that I was interested in.
My entire haul!
I had so much fun going around Komiket, browsing and choosing which titles to get. I would have loved to get more! While checking other people’s haul posts, I kept seeing titles that I want to try too. BUT! I still have a couple more comics in my TBR pile aside from the ones shown here, so I really should read the owns I one before I buy even more.
Do you guys read graphic novels or comics? What are some of your favorites?
I haven’t done a book haul post in ages! I’ve done some bookstagrams for some of my newly acquired books so I thought it would be a good idea to put them all together in one page. One of my bookish resolutions this year is to buy more ebooks than physical books because I find it easier to read on my Kindle. I’ve been able to follow this resolution, so far! I attended the Book Binge Bazaar hosted by National Bookstore, and only bought one book for the signing we went there for:
And here are some Kindle editions that I either bought or received as gifts:
The Dragon with a Chocolate Heart by Stephanie Burgis
The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli
The Queen’s Game by Carla de Guzman
I’m planning to go to Komiket, a local indie comic book convention and I have a few titles on my wishlist so I’m pretty sure I’ll be adding more to this pile! Comics and graphic novels are the exception to my rule of buying physical copies of books.
What about the rest of you, have you guys bought or received any books lately?
In yesterday’s blog post about resolutions, I mentioned that I need to incorporate more of my bookstagrams here on the blog. If you have an Instagram account and you’re interested in following me, I’m chachickenpie over there. I’ve been lucky enough to receive a few signed and personalized copies of my favorite books in the past month or so, and I wanted to share them here.
First is a lovely package sent by one of my favorite authors, Lucy Parker. Swipe left to see all of the photos:
Next, my good friend Michelle of See Michelle Read had Megan Whalen Turner personalize The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia for me! Again, swipe left to see all of the photos:
Last but not the least, new-to-me author Alyssa Cole sent me a signed copy of her upcoming book A Princess in Theory:
Thank you so much for all of these, Lucy, Michelle (and Megan), and Alyssa! 🙂 I actually have more books acquired in my Kindle, maybe I should do a book haul post for those sometime. What about you, what books have you acquired lately?
Quick post to share some of the book-related stuff I’ve acquired. I actually only bought one book: Monstress Vol. 2 by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, which I’m been waiting to become available here in the Philippines. I loved Vol. 1 and I can’t wait to dive into Vol. 2. On the same day, I also bought a sort of bookish lipstick because it has a Beauty and the Beast theme. Check it out:
Swipe right to see more pics. 🙂 Next is my haul of bookish shirts! I found a local seller here in the Philippines who does custom prints and I ordered the designs below. Honestly, it was so hard to narrow down the choices to just five designs. I wanted to many more. But then I can always order more later on, right? 😛 The last time I had bookish shirts was when I ordered them from Threadless, and sadly those shirts don’t fit anymore. These new shirts of mine will be perfect with my bookish skirts.
Swipe right to see more pics of the shirts, and a pic of me wearing one of them. 🙂 I shared the pic on Twitter and Ilona shared it, yay:
I’m traveling for a few days, so I wouldn’t be online here on WordPress that much but I will be updating all other social media apps that I have on my phone.:D What books or other bookish stuff have you acquired lately?
Every year, my online book club (YAckers) has a Secret Santa gift exchange. And because we all love books, we tend to focus on those as gifts. I’ve previously posted my haul from past Secret Santas (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) so I thought it would be nice to keep up with the tradition. These are the books I received:
And I also took a picture of books I received from past Secret Santa exchanges that I still haven’t found time to read:
Sigh, so many books, so little time! I find it interesting that most of the books I received from my fellow YAckers are fantasy titles. I guess we know what’s our favorite genre. I also have a box of Ferrero chocolates from the office Secret Santa (which I think isn’t that interesting haha) but that’s it for this year. Are you guys participating in any form of Secret Santa this year?
Last week’s book haul featured three romance titles, the last of which (A Promise of Fire Amanda Bouchet) was a fantasy romance. Ever since I finished reading that book, I have been in the mood for more fantasy romance. Which is why this week’s haul is all about that subgenre:
After The Winter King, I read Warprize by Elizabeth Vaughan but I didn’t get a picture! Which is a shame because I enjoyed reading the latter more than the former. If I ever find the time to actually sit down and write reviews, maybe I can do short ones for these.
I then went on a Grace Draven marathon this weekend, starting with Master of Crows:
Which was quickly followed up by The Lightning God’s Wife:
Which is so short that I finished reading it in one sitting! So then I read The Light Within:
Also finished that one in one sitting. I think both The Lightning God’s Wife and The Light Within are bonus short stories that serve like outtakes or epilogues for Master of Crows. The next in the series is a longer novella and is set a few years after the first book. I’ve already downloaded The Brush of Black Wings on my Kindle but haven’t started it yet:
I think I may have to pick up some contemporary titles after this. I don’t want to get burned out on fantasy romance! Also, it hasn’t been easy looking for fantasy romance books that I’m interested enough to try, so feel free to recommend titles if you have favorites.
Even though I’ve bought a couple of ebooks the past week, I’ve tried to be a good girl by resisting temptation in the form of a Kinokuniya sale. I still have so many unread physical books in my TBR pile so I resisted going to the bookstore because I know I might end up buying something. I need to go to bed soon because ugh, Monday will be here in a few minutes! But I’m curious, have you bought or received any books recently?
