In My Mailbox: July 25

In My Mailbox is a meme hosted by Kristi of The Story Siren and was inspired by Alea of Pop Culture Junkie. This meme is about books that you received or bought during the week.

These are the books that I bought this week:

I went to the book launch of the Philippine edition of Tall Story by Candy Gourlay, which I talked more about here. I have one signed copy for myself and I got extra signed copies to giveaway after I’ve reviewed the book. Here’s Candy’s signature in my copy:

I got Speaker of the Dead by Orson Scott Card from Powerbooks at 20% off. I loved Ender’s Game and several friends have mentioned that the sequel is even better so I decided to get it. I got Let’s Get Lost by Sarra Manning and the Dark Lord of Derkholm by Diana Wynne Jones from Celina. I look forward to reading my first Sarra Manning and I’ve also heard good things about the Dark Lord of Derkholm.

What about you, what’s in your mailbox? 🙂

  1. Two signed copies! That is so exciting. Right now I am reading a slew of wedding romance books, including Cara Lockwood’s “I Do But I Don’t,” to go along with the current GIVEAWAY I am having. Happy Reading!

    • It really is exciting because we don’t get a lot of book events over here. I only have two other author signatures aside from this one (Neil Gaiman’s and Sherwood Smith’s). Hope you’re enjoying your romance books. 🙂 If you have any suggestions along the lines of Jennifer Crusie or Julie James, I’d love to try those.

  2. Woowoo! Speaker for the Dead! I loved that book and was one of the people that liked it better than Ender’s Game (although I have much love for that book too).

I LOVE that you got a signed copy of the book. How cool is that?!!!

I haven’t heard of the others but I do have Howl’s Moving Castle on my virtual TBR list. I can’t wait to read some Dianna Wynne Jones. Those are all great acquisitions!

    • I really liked where Ender’s Game ended and I’m not that into sci fi so I didn’t think to read the sequels. Not until I was encouraged by others to read it. So it’s true then, Speaker for the Dead is even better?

I know, it’s cool to get signed copies! I’m spreading the love by having a giveaway. Although I still probably can’t afford an international giveaway.

Yay, you should bump up Howl’s Moving Castle in your TBR! I’d love to know what you think of Diana Wynne Jones. I have a lot of her books on my physical (meaning non-virtual) TBR but I don’t know when I’ll get to read them.

      • I want to buy Howl’s Moving Castle so I need to read a few books before I can justify buying.

If you don’t like science fiction, you may not like Speaker for the Dead as much as Ender’s Game. It’s very biology-y (but I loved that because I was a biology major for awhile–eventually got my degree in medical lab technology), but it’s also pretty introspective Valentine and Peter have a much bigger role in the book which was kind of cool.

I would still give the book a try.

      • The only other sci fi book that I’ve read was Young Miles by Lois McMaster Bujold. If Speaker for the Dead has great characterization, I’m sure I wouldn’t mind its sci fi-ness. I loved Valentine in the first book so I’d love to see more of her. Don’t worry, Carin. I’m definitely going to read Speaker for the Dead now that I have a copy. 😛

    • I need to finish reading the Diana Wynne Jones books that I have so I’ll have a reason to order the ones that I don’t. Her Dalemark books aren’t available here.

    • I know, considering that the two other copies of Tall Story are not for me. This week though, I already have more than I had last week because of Fully Booked High Street’s sale. 😛

      • haha, sales will be the end of people like us.

then again, even if it’s not on sale, if we really want something–we just buy. =| i got around ten books last week, only one of which was on sale. oops.

      • then again, even if it’s not on sale, if we really want something–we just buy.

I KNOW! So we can reason out that it’s good to buy a lot of books during sales because we get them cheaper. Maybe you should do an In My Mailbox post as well? 🙂

  3. I read all the Ender Game books. I’m surprised that you said most people recommended it. A lot of people I know kind of dismiss the other books. The whole series is good. I think you’ll enjoy the book a lot :)!

    • You did? Were they all good? Actually, they just recommended Speaker for the Dead. They said that it’s a lot better than Ender’s Game. I wasn’t planning on reading beyond Ender’s Game because I like where it ended but I get swayed easily.

Comments are like chocolate. :) Maraming salamat / thank you!
